Up until build 14959 of Windows 10, the Command Prompt had been part of the Win+X or power user menu, which appears when you right-click on the Start menu or simultaneously press the Windows logo and X keys.
With Windows 10 build 14971, Microsoft replaced Command Prompt and Command Prompt (Admin) entries with Windows PowerShell and Windows PowerShell (entries). As per Microsoft, this will bring the best command-line experience to the forefront for all power users. While it’s true that power users prefer PowerShell over Command Prompt, most end users are more comfortable with Command Prompt.
Of course, you can launch Command Prompt using search, Run command, and other methods, but what if Win+X menu was your favorite method to launch Command Prompt and Command Prompt as administrator?
As you might know, Microsoft has already replaced the classic Control Panel entry with Settings. One needs to edit the Registry or use a third-party tool to add Control Panel back to Win + X power user menu.
Luckily, you don’t need to manually edit the Registry to get back Command Prompt and Command Prompt (Admin) entries in the Win+X power user menu. There is a provision under Settings to replace the default Windows PowerShell and PowerShell (Admin) entries with Command Prompt and Command Prompt (Admin) entries.
NOTE: PC users who used Windows 8.1 would know that a similar option was present in Windows 8.1 to replace Command Prompt with PowerShell.
Add Command Prompt back to the Win + X menu in Windows 10
Step 1: Open the Settings app. Click Personalization.
Step 2: Click Taskbar to open taskbar settings.
Step 3: Finally, turn off the option labeled Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X.
